For Africa’s sole World Athletics Gold Label Marathon, we built an interactive race app in just 3 months featuring real-time route projection: athletes ran outside their own homes and experienced the authentic Cape Town course via GPS audio cues.

Project Background
Founded in 2007, the Cape Town Marathon is the crown jewel of African road racing. Facing pandemic cancellation in 2020, the race directors decided only three months prior to race day to launch an ambitious virtual edition.
Their challenge to IRTECH: construct a rock-solid mobile platform that unites runners globally and immerses them in the iconic landscape beneath Table Mountain.
Features & Technical Innovations
Live Route Projection & Virtual Race Atmosphere
The app departed from conventional tracking through signature innovations:
- Live Route Projection: Whether running through Hyde Park, Central Park, or the Swiss Alps, each runner’s GPS distance was projected in real-time onto the actual Cape Town marathon route map.
- Frictionless In-App Ticketing: Integrated payment flows enabled runners to purchase race entries and charity pins directly inside the app.
- Personalized Start Ceremony: Runners initiated their own countdown and official fanfare whenever they were ready.
- Social Sharing: Athletes easily broadcasted their course achievements, split times, and finisher certificates to Instagram and Twitter.
Immersive Audio Experience
Local Flair & Motivation with Stand-up Comedian Dalin Oliver
Via the integrated audio system of our GPS Flow Engine, athletes were treated to an elaborately produced comedic audio tour. Popular South African stand-up comedian Dalin Oliver entertained runners with witty historical stories and trivia about statues, landmarks, and sights along Cape Town’s coastline.
The aim was to instill a genuine on-course sensation: contextual mile marker cues, humor, and encouragement turned a solitary run at home into an unforgettable shared marathon celebration.

Project Timeline & Agile Execution
From Concept to Global Race Day in Just 3 Months
The project timeline was extraordinarily tight. With COVID-19 safety regulations constantly shifting, the organizers decided to pivot to a fully virtual marathon solution just three months ahead of the event date.
This required our engineering team to ship a resilient, high-precision tracking and audio solution in record time. Thanks to the battle-tested architecture of the IRTECH GPS Flow Engine, all milestones were reached without compromise, culminating in timely app store certification.
Engineering Resilience: Defeating OEM Battery Killers
Vendor-specific battery management across Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei devices routinely causes background tracking failures in consumer sports apps. IRTECH’s automated onboarding assistant solved this by steering athletes through the exact system dialogs needed to whitelist the app.
Results
The event was a triumph. Thousands of hobbyists and world-class champions (including Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah) completed the marathon and shared their projected race certificates worldwide.
