Wings for Life World Run: Global Running App with Dynamic Catcher Car
For the global Wings for Life World Run, we engineered a scalable mobile application where hundreds of thousands of runners simultaneously race against a moving virtual finish line – rock-solid across timezones and spotty cellular coverage.

Project Background
During the World Run sponsored by Red Bull GmbH, hundreds of thousands of runners across 150+ countries start at the exact same second (e.g., 1:00 PM Swiss local time). The defining twist: there is no stationary finish line. Instead, 30 minutes after gun-off, a virtual "Catcher Car" starts chasing participants at steadily increasing speeds.
Once a runner is overtaken by the Catcher Car, their race is concluded. The objective of this project was to enable people worldwide to participate via smartphone – regardless of whether an official flagship event existed in their city.
Year-Round Training & Interactive 3D Replays
Throughout the year, the app serves as a training ground. Runners can initiate preparation runs and receive voice-over cues when the simulated Catcher Car approaches.
The crowning feature after each session is an interactive 3D replay: the full GPS track is rendered topographically, displaying pace intervals, elevation, and the exact interception point. The result is easily shared across messengers and social platforms.
Organized App Runs Worldwide
A key community feature is "Organized App Runs": local running clubs and ambassadors can designate custom courses. The app computes the exact distance to the venue via GPS, navigates participants to the starting gate, and syncs local clocks with the global countdown signal.
Furthermore, full registration and donation processing was integrated: runners pay entry fees via credit card in-app and can boost their contribution directly toward spinal cord research.
Engineering Challenge: Resilient Background GPS
Zero Data Loss Through System Sleep and Network Outages
An agile engineering squad of 4 developers delivered the production release in four months. The core technical challenge was bulletproof background GPS:
The telemetry engine developed by IRTECH continues precise position calculation even when the app is suspended to the background or cellular connectivity is temporarily dropped. Telemetry points are encrypted in a local queue and reconciled once reconnecting.
- Continuous distance and cadence computation without interruption
- Intelligent battery consumption optimization over multi-hour marathons
- Real-time synchronization with the Microsoft Azure backend built by partner firm Tractalis
Impact
The Wings for Life World Run app demonstrated exceptional stability across multiple global editions, helping raise tens of millions of euros for spinal cord injury research and setting the industry standard for mass athletic telemetry.
