Alpine Ski GPS Tracking App: Extreme High-Altitude Telemetry MVP for Red Bull
For a pioneering winter sports contest by Red Bull, IRTECH created an alpine tracking prototype that accurately logs speed, altitude, and trajectory in sub-zero alpine conditions and complete cellular blackout.

Project Background
Red Bull GmbH explored a novel winter sports event format bridging freeride, downhill, and ski-touring disciplines into a connected digital race ranking.
To validate feasibility, a rugged prototype was required to record ski athletes during descent and relay timing data to race control without requiring athlete intervention.
Alpine Obstacles: Freezing Temperatures & Radio Shadows
Mountain topography poses unique challenges for software and sensors:
- Cellular Dead Zones: Deep valleys and ridges frequently sever internet connectivity
- Cold-Induced Throttle: Freezing temperatures aggressively throttle CPU and battery life
- High-Velocity Trajectories: High speeds demand high-frequency sensor capture to trace turns accurately
Resilient Architecture & Module Reuse
Telemetry points are stored in an encrypted local queue. Whenever an athlete passes a base station or lift with temporary reception, background workers synchronize data transparently.
A manual fallback submission screen was also engineered for race marshals.
Outcome
The prototype delivered crystal-clear telemetry traces to race control, validating that reliable athletic live tracking can be achieved in extreme alpine conditions using standard consumer smartphones.
